The American Scholar Group (ASG) is proud to announce that Yosuke Sugano will be joining the St. Francis University (SFU) Division I Football team in Fall 2018!
The Greenville High School (GHS) senior made his commitment official during a signing ceremony on March 6th at Greenville High School (GHS).
Yosuke first learned about ASG and GHS in 2016 when his Japanese high school football team visited for a Summer football camp. The team participated in joint drills and an exhibition game with the local All-Star team throughout the week-long camp. The experience left such a positive mark on the Japanese native that he decided to attend GHS his senior year and play varsity high school football.
“I never thought I would be able to compete with the American players but after playing in the camp, I felt more confident”. In his senior year, Yosuke played Defensive End and Fullback for the GHS Trojans. The team earned a 9-3 record and made it to the state playoff competition. He had a very successful season, registering 10 sacks, 62 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries and 2 TDs.
As the season progressed, he began dreaming about playing at the collegiate level. Although he received several scouting offers from Division II and III teams, he had his hopes set on playing for a Division I program. When St. Francis University invited him to attend an on-campus visit and a meeting with the coaches, he could hardly believe it. He was extended an offer during the visit after impressing the coaches with his football knowledge and acumen while analyzing game film.
Yosuke was overjoyed about accepting the offer and shared that, “it’s my dream come true to play for Division I program. Ever since I watched the Super Bowl in 2007, I have always hoped I could play American college football and now it’s really going to happen!”
He hopes that his story will serve as inspiration for a new generation of Japanese football players. “I want other Japanese football players to know that they can make it too,” shared Yosuke.
Yosuke plans to major in Exercise Science at SFU. He also hopes to become a football coach in Japan after his studies.
Congratulations, Yosuke!
