America Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day
January 17th, 2017 | US Holidays
For many American students, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is simply a day without school. Students, and many adults, do not understand the significance of this important holiday. In 1983 the United States government set aside the third Monday in January to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a tireless advocate for African-American Civil Rights. Dr. King championed the tactics of civil disobedience and non-violent protest during the civil rights struggles of the 1950s and 1960s, becoming America’s foremost civil rights leader. Due to Dr. King’s determined efforts, racial segregation ceased and voting rights for African-Americans were expanded throughout much of the United States. In January of every year Americans celebrate the memory of Dr. King and the great strides toward justice and equality for all that he helped to achieve.
