The American Scholar Group’s area of operations in the United States is located along the border of northeastern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania, 90 minutes from both Cleveland and Pittsburgh. There are many opportunities for international students to observe and participate in American life and culture in this area while benefiting from its educational resources.
First up we are looking at examples of opportunities for shopping and dining.
While ASG provides regular meals for our students, sometimes they want to go out to celebrate or try something different.
Our students in Youngstown, Ohio are 10-30 minutes from not only a wide variety of American options, but also Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean and Chinese restaurants such as Mizu, Pho Viez, Pho Saigon, and Mogobo.
Traveling further from the dorms, Pittsburgh has a multitude of flavors from all over the world, including numerous Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese restaurants offering a wider selection than smaller cities.
Green Pepper is popular with many of Korean students and Chengdu Gourmet is just down the street.
Pleasant surprises include Spice Island Tea House, which offers Thai, Burmese, Indonesian, Malaysian, and Singaporean dishes near the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Melon.
Cleveland rivals Pittsburgh’s gastronomic offerings and has its own standouts, such as both full Japanese and Malaysian menus at Pacific East as well as the artistic food stylings of Wild Mango.
Both cities also offer unique American dishes, such as the Pitts-burger & Cheese at Primanti Brothers in Pittsburgh and Slyman’s Corned Beef sandwiches in Cleveland. Such meals are a delicious way for students to engage in cultural immersion.
Students can also easily purchase basic supplies for school & daily living or travel to large shopping malls for brands like: Burberry, Gucci, David Yurman, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Saks Fifth Avenue, Vera Bradley.
